A talc-free natural herbal baby powder gentle enough for baby and the whole family.Caring for a newborn is one of life’s ultimate challenges. There are the hurdles we all know (but parents never complain about, right?) — the sleepless nights, learning your baby’s needs without the helpful use of language. Another is the challenge of finding really high-quality products to treat your baby’s tender skin.
Dusting baby’s bottom with a little powder is a long-held tradition of parents everywhere. Baby powder has fallen out of favor in recent years due to it’s main ingredient, talc, being listed as a possible carcinogen. Many commercial baby powders contain synthetic fragrances which can be irritating to baby’s sensitive skin.
Though there seems to be some debate over whether modern talc is safe in and of itself, reports (like this one, https://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/002719.htm ) describe dangers to the bladder and kidneys, nervous system, lungs, and far more when it is inhaled. The American Academy of Pediatrics also advises against the use of baby powder, and they even show a link to Infant Phthalate Exposure. Not to mention all of the synthetic fragrances involved in “original” baby powder, which were derived from petro-chemicals (Ewww!), and are known to cause skin irritation and allergies, among other things.
While the verdict is still out on all the risks talc may carry, research seems to suggest that talc may increase the risk of ovarian cancer in women. (http://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancercauses/othercarcinogens/athome/talcum-powder-and-cancer) Even the slightest suggestion of something this serious is all I need to start looking for better alternatives.
Great absorbency and helps protect against diaper rashes and chaffing.
About the ingredients…
kaolin clay, arrowroot, marshmallow root, comfrey root, lavender, chamomile, aloe vera, and plantain herb powder
✿ Arrowroot: derived from the rhizome of the South American plant Maranta arundinacea. Some historians say that the name comes from the practice of using arrowroot to draw out the poison in poisoned-arrow wounds, thanks to its moisture absorbing qualities.
✿ Marshmallow Root Powder: for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping to heal and prevent diaper rash.
✿ Kaolin Clay: is mild, and it is absorbent but will not over-dry the skin. It contains zinc, which is healing to inflammations and broken skin, and it is mildly disinfectant.
✿ Calendula: is really the queen of the baby powder herbs. the sunny yellow petals of this relative of the garden-variety marigold are antibacterial and immuno-stimulant, and they help in the formation of collagen and in the reduction of scarring any time broken skin is involved.
✿ Chamomile: is one of my favorite herbs since it has so many different uses. It too is very healing and has anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomile is also very soothing.
✿ Plantain Leaf: The leaf of the plantain contains allantoin which has antibacterial properties. Therefore, once the leaves are applied to wounds it kills the germs as well as bacteria. Thus, speeding up the healing process with the production of new skin cells.
✿ Lavender: The scent of the lavender plant is used in many skincare products to give a calming effect. Throughout the years lavender has become famous for helping you to achieve a calm state and better sleep by relaxing the body. (Great for you and baby!)
✿ Comfrey: Comfrey is considered nature’s little miracle worker due to its wonderful compounds including allantoin, rosmarinic acid, and tannins. Combined, these substances help with cellular regeneration including skin regrowth.
✿ Myrrh Resin: the resin from a trees in the genus commiphora, is disinfectant, wound-healing, anti-fungal (a great additive when yeast is involved!), anti-inflammatory, and stimulating to the circulatory system.
