Description

Olive leaf is an herb that comes from the same Mediterranean tree from which olive oil is produced. Like the oil, the leaf contains antioxidant compounds. Of particular interest is a chemical called oleuropein, which is the same antioxidant polyphenol responsible for the tangy, slightly bitter taste of good quality olive oil. The whole herb is tinctured or used to make tea, usually in combination with other herbs to enhance flavor.

It was first recorded to have been used medicinally in Ancient Egypt, where it was adored as a symbol of heavenly power. It was also the Egyptians who first started making soap and cosmetics with olive leaves and oil.

In Greece it was a symbol of life. The olive Leaf is one of Greek Medicine’s all-round tonics, and a remedy for keeping strong and healthy. The Greeks were said to grind the dry leaves down into a powder form to use as herbal medicine for infections.

Olive leaf was referenced as medicine in the Bible. “The fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the leaf thereof for medicine.” (Ezekiel 47:12)

In traditional Moroccan medicine, it was used to control diabetes and stabilize blood sugar.

More and more studies are proving that this herb is a powerful medicinal tool, with benefits including immune system support, increased energy and promoting healthy blood pressure. Because of the promising scientific studies indicating its medicinal potential, olive leaf continues to gain recognition for its various health benefits.

How to prepare Olive Leaf Tea

If you’re looking to make Olive Leaf Tea, simply boil one ounce of loose leaf herb in a gallon of water for five minutes. Next, turn off the heat and let it steep for one hour.

You can sweeten with lemon and honey for a delicious flavor. This formulation can then be bottled and stored in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Another way to consume the loose Olive Leaf is to add a teaspoon of the loose leaves to a smoothie. You will barely taste its light flavor and still receive its many benefits.
