The Toxins Hiding in Your Tanning Oil

If you currently use a tanning oil from a shop, take a look at the ingredients. Like sunscreens, you will probably find that most of the ingredients are ones that you can’t even pronounce. They don’t even look like real words! If you can’t pronounce them, how do you know they are any good for your skin?

Chances are they honestly aren’t that good. Many of the traditional tanning oils are full of toxins that will cause harm to your skin, especially when in contact with UV rays from the sun. Some of the toxins will even sound beneficial until you find out how they are made.

One of those toxins that sound good is mineral oil. Rather than being full of good minerals that will help to boost your skin’s health, it’s full of petroleum. You know based on what petrol does to the environment that it is NOT a good ingredient. It is also a carcinogen, increasing your risk of cancer. Do you really want to use that when you are laying out to get a nice dark tan?

Most store-bought tanning oils will use preservatives in the ingredients. You want to avoid food without preservatives, right? Well, the stuff you put on your skin should be artificial preservative-free, too! In fact, tanning oil can actually be worse. Your skin will absorb those parabens and BHT.

Oxybenzone is a chemical compound and it is the most common chemical UV filter used in sun screens today. According to EWG, oxybenzone is found in 80% of chemical sunscreens on the market and it is estimated to be detected in 96% of American population. EWG rated oxybenzone 8/10 on toxicity rating. Natural Oil – the Basic Ingredient in Suntan Oil

It may sound obvious, but oil is the basic ingredient of tanning oil. The clue really is in the name. The good news is that there are plenty of natural and organic oils out there that will help, and many of them contain an SPF factor naturally. That means you will help your skin get a golden look while protecting it from some damage to the skin.

INGREDIENTS: Ingredients: Cocus nucifera (Coconut Oil*), Theobroma cacao, (Cocoa Seed Oil*) Persea americana (Avocado Oil*), Daucus carota sativa (Carrot Seed Oil*), Sesamum indicum (Sesame Oil*), Passiflora edulis (Passion Fruit Seed Oil*), Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed (Tamanu Oil*), Argania spinosa (Argan Oil*), essential oils *Certified Organic. That’s it, Nothing else!

HOW TO USE: For a long lasting natural tan, apply evenly to exposed body skin and sit under morning sun for 10 to 15 minutes.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. If you have highly sensitive skin do a test patch prior to use. Discontinue use if irritation occurs. Store in a cool dry place.

Why These Ingredients?

• Coconut Oil: is a great tanning oil for people with sensitive skin. While some natural oils can have adverse effects like skin irritation, coconut oil has tons of fatty acids that can help your skin. It also contains a light SPF 4, which makes it a perfect natural tanning oil .Coconut Oil is an oil rich in essential fatty acids, it nourishes skin, protects elasticity, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
• Cocao Butter Oil: is high in oleic acid, a saturated fatty acid which is highly compatible with the sebum naturally produced by our skin, which means it is readily absorbed and is said to help the absorption of other active ingredients. Cocoa butter oil is also rich in antioxidants and phytochemicals, which help fight off free-radical damage to the skin, improve blood flow to the skin, and slow skin-aging by protecting against damage from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Cocoa bean oil has also been promoted to heal rashes from conditions like eczema and dermatitis.
• Avocado Oil: Like coconut oil, avocado oil also contains natural fatty acids, vitamins, as well as lecithin, which can moisturize your skin. Avocado oil has a naturally occurring SPF of 15.
• Sesame Oil: A little bit of sesame oil goes a long way. This oil is thick and contains a very strong scent, but is a great addition to a tanning oil and also naturally contains a light SPF (around 4 to 6). Sesame oil and coconut oil go together well for a darker tan.
• Tamanu Oil: Tamanu oil contains moisturizing omega fatty acids and promotes new, healthy cell growth. Tamanu oil has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, which provide wound-healing benefits for the skin.
• Argan Oil: This oil contains anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties and vitamins. It hydrates the skin deeply. The oil is useful for many skin issues like minimizing fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, stretch marks, etc. and provides even tone, elasticity, and radiant skin texture. Argan is an oil rich in essential fatty acids, it nourishes skin, protects elasticity, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  Free radical damage is one of the main process by which cell damage occurs as we age. This may be partly prevented by ensure a good supply of antioxidants. Argan Oil contains two of the most powerful antioxidants for skin. Flavonoids and Tocopherol/ Vitamin E that makes up 69% of the tocopherols found in Argan oil. Argan oil is also rich in Linoleic Acid.
• Carrot Seed Oil: Carrot Seed Oil is a common tanning oil ingredient, because it’s rich in beta carotene, vitamins A and E and pro-vitamin A.
