Description

Lemon Balm is the most powerful natural herb for the soothing of outbreaks and skin ailments.
100% Organic.

This cold sore ointment combines a powerful anti-viral herb well known to soothe cold sores and essential oils hand picked for their anti-viral and pain relief properties.

I infuse cold pressed organic olive oil with fresh lemon balm grown here on my farm. This process takes weeks because I never heat treat my oils. This oil is the basis for the salve.

About the Ingredients

🐝 Beeswax carries antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.
Handy that it is also used to make salve. 🙂

✿ Olive Oil infused with lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) :
This oil is full of beneficial lipids, fatty acids and amino acids. Full of vitamin E, olive oil has antioxidant properties that help to protect the skin from damage.

About the Essential Oils

✿ Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) Essential Oil:
Clove is an analgesic oil (assists in pain relief), it also has a numbing action that can soothe the painful burning, tingling sensation that is commonly felt. Clove is rich in antioxidants. This will aid in a quicker healing process of your cold sores. It also has anesthetic, antiviral, and antimicrobial qualities. These properties make clove bud essential oil assist in lessening pain, inflammation, and the spread of herpes virus infection.

✿ Ginger (Zingiber officinale) Essential Oil:
This is a warming oil and can be effective at assisting pain reduction resulting from HSV (herpes simplex virus). Additionally, it was part of a study looking at the best essential oils for cold sores. Results indicate that ginger may be a potential antiviral agent against HSV. (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4393490/ ) Also, according to a publication of the US National Library of Medicine, ginger is one of the best choices of essential oils for herpes simplex virus. It is immune boosting, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. (source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17976968/ )

✿ Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) Essential Oil:
Here’s another essential oil with research to back it up. Studies indicate that it shows significant antiviral effects against HSV, meaning it can potentially reduce the duration and effects of cold sores. This makes it one of the best essential oils for cold sores. Additionally, its cooling, soothing effect may also assist with pain relief.

✿ Peppermint (Mentha piperita) Essential Oil:
An older lab study from 2003 on HSV demonstrated that peppermint oil had the potential to calm the symptoms of an activated herpes strain. (source: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/13678235 )

According to a study published in 2003, peppermint oil has been shown to reduce the activity of the herpes simplex type 1 virus by up to 82% in cultured cells. The researchers also tested applying peppermint oil at different stages of the viral infection. What they found was that peppermint oil was most effective when the virus was pre-treated with it. This means that, much like tea tree oil, peppermint oil is effective at destroying the viral particles that haven’t infected cells yet, but really doesn’t do much for cells that are already infected.

✿ Helichrysum italicum:
One of the best essential oils to use for assistance in healing the skin, reducing pain, and alleviating inflammation. Helichrysum can assist in the repair ofdamaged nerves caused by the herpes virus.
NOTE: There are two types of Helichrysum -gymnocephalum is far cheaper and most used to support the respiratory system. -italicum (4x more expensive) is best known for its skin nourishing, healing and restorative properties. More specifically, this golden oil has properties which support the healing of soft tissue damage, pain, inflammation, bruising, and helps relieve itching. If you see Helichrysum in a formula for the skin, do make certain that it is italicum. 🙂

✿ Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) Essential Oil:
A well-known oil with powerful anti-viral, antiseptic, and antibacterial properties.
A great oil to use to aid the skin’s healing process once the painful blister has broken open.

✿ Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Essential Oil:
Lavender essential oil is the swiss army knife of essential oils. Herpes viruses usually cause inflammation, irritation, and blisters on the skin. While it may not have any effect on the virus, Lavender oil soothes your skin with anti-inflammatory properties.
NOTE: Lavender is used in the w/o wintergreen option.

✿ Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) Essential Oil:
A team of scientists published a study in 2003 where they pitted 12 essential oils against each other to determine which ones were most effective at destroying the herpes virus. They determined that lemongrass oil was hands down the most effective essential oil at destroying free particles of the herpes virus. In fact, other mainstay essential oils commonly used against cold sores like tea tree oil and peppermint oil didn’t even come close to the effectiveness of lemongrass oil. However, like most other essential oils, it was only effective when the virus was exposed to the oil before cells were infected.

✿ Wintergreen (Gaultheria fragrantissima) Essential Oil:
Wintergreen essential oil is great for pain relief due to the methyl salicylate it contains.

NOTE: Wintergreen should not be used by pregnant women or those taking blood thinning medications. I don’t use it with children, either. If you need this balm for a child, please make sure to choose the w/o wintergreen option and I will make a balm up for you without the wintergreen. 🙂

And the star of our show, Lemon Balm

✿ Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) Essential Oil:
Melissa essential oil (Melissa officinalis) has powerful anti-viral features that can assist in speeding up your healing process after a herpes outburst. It is easily absorbed into your skin.

One study by the US National Library of Medicine found that Melissa officinalis oil inhibits the ability of herpes viruses to infect your skin cells. (source: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22377592/ )

Lemon balm possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Natural herbal cosmetics containing Melissa are able to alleviate redness, itching, swelling, irritation, burning, and rashes of sensitive skin. It also prevents skin infections and acne outbreaks. Lemon balm contains powerful natural astringents and antiviral properties. Lemon balm also possesses important antibacterial property call eugenol.

Anthony William says… 💬 There are many viruses that fall within the herpes family, all of which have multiple undiscovered strains. At this time, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) has over 60 strains, shingles has 31 (both rashing and non-rashing), HSV-1 has close to 10 strains, HSV-2 has around 15 strains, plus other Herpes Simplex viruses. Then there’s 20 strains of cytomegalovirus causing health issues and many undiscovered strains of Human Herpes virus (HHV). These viruses are responsible for more symptoms and conditions than you could imagine. [source] 💬

To date, there have been many MANY studies confirming what folk herbalists have known for hundreds of years: lemon balm can be helpful against viral activity, specifically the herpes-type viruses.

Lemon balm possesses valuable properties and natural anti-herpes compounds. It contains very powerful antiviral properties. Some studies suggest that lemon balm is able to stop the herpes virus from attaching to and replicating inside body cells. Tannins are also powerful astringents, reducing swelling, itching, and pain caused by cold sores, genital herpes, chicken pox, and shingles.

Another important antibacterial content in lemon balm is eugenol. Eugenol effectively combats bacterial infections and helps to relaxing muscles and calming nerve pain. It helps to promote healing and restore your immune system. It is quite helpful for the secondary infections (like impetigo) that often accompany breakouts.

Lemon balm contains terpenes, which are known to produce calming effects. Stress, insomnia, or continuous lack of quality sleep are among the factors that trigger a herpes outbreak. Terpenes have been proven to be effective mitigating stress associated symptoms, soothing nerve tissues and promoting sleep. Hence, terpenes act to directly tackle the factors that trigger a herpes outbreak.

Many scientific studies have confirmed that lemon balm is a very powerful anti-herpes herb. Using a proper lemon balm herbal remedy, it will shave days off of outbreak time. It also helps to significantly reduce the frequency of herpes outbreaks.

In one placebo-controlled study, 66 volunteers who suffered cold sores participated in a lemon balm study. Day 2 results showed that those applying lemon balm significantly reduced the number of blisters and the size of the lesion became much smaller. Additionally, lemon balm reduced the severity and relieved discomfort.

The key to success with this product is to use a TINY BIT, but very FREQUENTLY. It is the REPEATED application of a TINY bit of Lemon Balm that helps! 100% natural and organic formula. Concentrated – a TINY BIT goes a long way. In a base of olive oil, I infuse Lemon Balm herb, (harvested at blooming) essential oils of Melissa (lemon balm), tea tree, lemon grass, wintergreen, clove and peppermint. Amazing scent! Relieves pain & burning, and promotes fast healing of tissues.

And last, but not least… Try L-Lysine. I have stopped adding it to this formula as it simply wasn’t enough to make a difference in the small quantities I could get into suspension in a balm. But the following FYI…

✿ L-Lysine & How it works

In order to replicate in the body, herpes simplex needs a steady source of arginine. This amino acid converts into nitric oxide within your body, a chemical necessary to expand blood vessels and improve blood flow. Lysine is thought to interfere with arginine being absorbed into your intestine, making the amino acid unavailable for the virus. So even if it may not cure a cold sore infection, lysine can help slow or prevent the HSV-1 replication process.

I have a friend that takes 2,000mg an hour the first day at the onset of a cold sore. She spaces it out every two hours the second day. I’ve heard people that say it didn’t do anything for them. Usually it is because they aren’t taking enough.

In addition, older research suggests that lysine may reduce the number of occurrences of infection and decrease healing time. For example, a small study from 2005 showed that lysine sped up the healing process for 87 percent of participants, shortening the average time from 21 days to 6 days for these people.

Lysine Ointment has been used to eliminate the tingling, burning, itching, tenderness and blistering of lips with a full cure with in 48 hrs of use. No adverse effects. See? L-Lysine is a valuable addition to your cold sore fighting arsenal.
